Planning

What happens after planning approval?

What happens after planning approval?

The next steps once planning permission has been granted.

Receiving planning approval is a big milestone, but it isn’t usually the point where building work begins.

Before construction starts, there are still a few important steps to work through. Understanding what comes next can help keep your project moving smoothly and avoid unnecessary delays.

Read the decision notice

When planning permission is granted, the council will issue a decision notice.

It is worth reading this carefully. Some approvals include conditions that must be met before work starts, while others may require additional information to be submitted first.

Prepare the technical information

Planning drawings show what has been approved, but builders often need much more detailed information before they can begin.

This is usually the stage where technical drawings, structural calculations and other construction details are prepared.

Building regulations

Planning permission and Building Regulations are two separate things.

Even if planning permission has been approved, your project may still need Building Regulations approval before work can begin.

We’ll explain Building Regulations in more detail in a separate guide.

Choose your renovation company

If you haven’t already chosen a renovation company, this is often the right time to start speaking to them.

With approved drawings in place, conversations are usually much clearer because everyone is pricing the same project.

Plan the build

Before work begins, it is worth discussing a rough programme with your builder.

You might talk about start dates, access to the property, deliveries and anything you need to prepare before construction begins.

A little planning at this stage can make the rest of the project much less stressful.

Final thoughts

Planning approval is an important step, but it is only one part of the renovation journey.

Taking the time to prepare properly before work begins can help your project run more smoothly from day one.
